As we age, our skin begins to lose its natural elasticity, making it prone to wrinkles, fine lines, and other signs of aging. To prevent or reduce the effects of this natural process, the earlier you start your skincare treatment/routine, the better results you will have as you age. However, the question is, when should you start taking care of your skin?
I know many women who simply have washed their face on a daily basis for years without doing anything else, and now in their 40's and 50's are just beginning to consider other products.
Should you wait until you see the signs of aging, or should you start a skincare routine early on? Let's answer these questions and we'll also provide you with some useful tips to start your skincare routine at an appropriate time.
Everyone, All The Time
Some aspects of a skincare routine do not depend on age and should be practiced regularly and early on:
- Cleanse (every day)
- Use a Toner (every day)
- Moisturize (every day)
- Exfoliate (once a week)
The rest of your routine will depend on your age and the condition of your skin.
Start In Your 20s
If you're in your 20s your skin is still in its prime, producing collagen and elastin in abundance. However, there are still environmental factors that can damage your skin and accelerate aging. You may also still be dealing with oily/acne-prone skin. For these reasons, incorporating a light moisturizer like our Gentle Radiance Daily Moisturizer with Hyaluronic Acid is an excellent choice.
At night you may want to try our Gentle Radiance Cleansing Balm, which is specifically formulated for sensitive/reactive skin, but perfect for all skin types. This solid-to-delicate oil cleanser feels like heaven on your face, leaving your skin feeling clean and silky soft.
Consider, also, our Magnolia Facial Serum, the perfect overnight solution for dry skin. Our serum is powered by African Marula Oil, an ingredient rich in antioxidants. This little bottle produces quite a bit of use as just 2-3 drops per use is all you need to put the finishing touch on your nighttime routine.
Skincare In Your Early 30s
In your early 30s, your skin begins to slow down the production of collagen and elastin. You may want to switch to a more hydrating moisturizer or start using a weekly mask to keep your skin looking healthy and radiant.
If you opt for a mask remember to wash and moisturize your face before you apply the mask. Bacteria on your face creates the perfect breeding ground for acne. You don’t want it to get trapped beneath the mask and cause problems.
Using a good moisturizer like our Day and Night Whipped Moisturizer adds a barrier of protection for your skin and prevents chaffing and irritation.
Thinking of trying chemical peels or products that contain Retinol? A good rule of thumb is to proceed with caution! Be sure to do a patch test before you applying these products to your face. According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), these products can cause skin irritation.
For exfoliation, we suggest our Magnolia Jojoba Brightening Face Mask, or Charcoal & Tea Tree Oil Deep Cleansing Face Mask (depending upon your skin type). Our masks are specifically formulated without harsh ingredients to give the most effective results without possibly irritating your skin.
Skincare In Your Late 30s
In your late 30s, you may start experiencing visible signs of aging, such as fine lines or wrinkles, and loss of facial volume. At this point, you can consider adding in some stronger anti-aging ingredients, such as peptides or growth factors. You can experience the luxurious, nourishing result of hydrolyzed silk peptides in our Hydrating Aloe Face Wash, and our Rose Aloe Hydrating Toner, and in all three of our Hand & Body lotions.
Skincare In Your 40s and Beyond
Once you've hit your 40s, you'll want to focus on maintaining its health and radiance. You can add in additional treatments such as peels, But it's important to remember not to overdo it, as excessive exfoliation or harsh treatments can damage your skin and cause sensitization.
I’ve found that the Fresh Magnolia Glow Stick is a simple way to start my morning regimen. This moisturizing balm is full of antioxidants and is formulated for normal, dry, and mature skin. Glide the product over your warm wet face in circular motions for easy application. Blot gently with a towel and allow a few minutes for absorption before applying your makeup. The powerful results of this nourishing blend can be seen in softer skin and reduced appearance of wrinkles as improved hydration visibly softens your face.
Everyone’s Skin Is Different
It's important to note that everyone's skin is different, and there is no one right time to start a skincare routine. Factors such as genetics, health, and lifestyle will all play a part as to when your skin may start to show signs of aging. The key is to be aware of what your skin may need and start a routine that works for you.
The earlier you start your skincare routine, the better your results. Starting your skincare routine in your 20s, finding the right products for your 30s, and focusing on maintaining healthy skin in your 40s and beyond can help you keep your skin looking its best. Overall, the most important thing to remember is to listen to your skin's needs and adjust your routine accordingly. By starting early and staying consistent, you can keep your skin healthy and beautiful.
