Every January, the latest skincare predictions and trends for the year are announced, so, you may have heard of an exciting new ingredient, Exosomes, that some are referring to as"poor man's botox."
Exosomes are being praised for their ability to support cell repair, improve skin texture, and smooth fine lines, all while being a more affordable option compared to umbilical cord stem cells.
It’s easy to see why exosomes generate so much buzz, but as with any new trend, it’s important to weigh both the potential benefits and the uncertainties before jumping in.
Why Exosomes Are Exciting
Exosomes claims state they help rejuvenate the skin by:
- Boosting collagen production, which can enhance firmness and elasticity.
- Encouraging skin regeneration, potentially reducing fine lines and improving texture.
- Promoting hydration and resilience, leaving skin looking healthier and more radiant.
With all of these potential benefits, it’s no wonder skincare brands are racing to incorporate exosome-inspired formulas into their products.
Why Some Doctors Are Hesitating
While the potential of exosomes is exciting, it’s important to note that there are currently no FDA-approved skincare products containing this ingredient. Experts, including board-certified dermatologist Corey L. Hartman, MD, have raised concerns about:
- Sourcing and safety regulations, as exosomes are derived from biological materials and require stringent processing.
- Lack of standardized testing, making it difficult to ensure consistent quality and effectiveness across different products.
- Overpromising claims, as the long-term benefits of topical exosomes are still being studied.
Experts agree that while exosomes hold promise, more research and regulatory oversight are needed before they can be considered a reliable skincare solution.
Should You Try Exosome Skincare? A Fair And Balanced Approach:
If you’re intrigued by exosomes, you’re not alone. Trying new skincare products can be a great experience, and it’s important to remember that the absence of FDA approval does not necessarily indicate that an ingredient is unsafe.
However, I recommend 2 things: 1 before investing in exosome-containing products, and 1 after:
- Consider whether the brand provides transparency about ingredient sourcing, because my first concern would be that some companies will take unethical short cuts just so they can get the products out there.
- Patch test. I recommend this with any new skincare product. That way, if you have an adverse reaction, it’s not on your face.
