Navigating Menopause: Understanding and Managing the Emotional Rollercoaster

When I was a young teen, I remember my exasperated mom telling me one day, "Menopause just makes me feel like I'm going crazy!" Years later, when my emotional state began to make me feel like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde all within a few minutes of each other, I remembered her making that statement and I felt a little comfort in knowing I wasn't truly losing my mind.

Whether you're approaching menopause, going through it, or have already crossed that bridge, it's essential to understand what’s happening and how to navigate these changes with grace and care.

The Emotional Rollercoaster of Menopause

Menopause can feel like an emotional rollercoaster, leaving you feeling like you're teetering on the edge of sanity. One minute you're laughing, the next you're crying, one moment you snap at someone impatiently, the next you're understanding and compassionate... It's frustrating for sure. But rest assured, you're not alone, and you're certainly not losing your mind. Here’s what the experts say about why you might be feeling this way:

  1. Hormonal Fluctuations: As estrogen and progesterone levels decline, they can cause mood swings, anxiety, and even depression. These hormones play a significant role in regulating mood, and their fluctuation can make you feel like a lunatic - i.e., emotionally unbalanced.

  2. Physical Symptoms: Hot flashes, night sweats, and sleep disturbances are common during menopause, unfortunately. These symptoms can lead to chronic fatigue, which in turn, can affect your mood and irritability.

  3. Cognitive Changes: Experiencing "brain fog," memory lapses, or difficulty concentrating can be unsettling to say the least. But, these cognitive shifts are a common part of menopause, you lucky lady, and they are the reason you feel out of sorts.

  4. Emotional Impact: Menopause often coincides with other life changes, such as children leaving home, aging parents, or career transitions. These additional stressors can compound the emotional challenges you’re already facing. My suggestion? Keep tissues handy.

  5. Societal Pressures: It's true that our culture often places significant pressure on women regarding aging and femininity. "Ageism" is the trendy name. This obviously contributes to the feelings of inadequacy, undesirability, and isolation you might be feeling, making the menopause transition even more stressful.

Best Things You Can Do In This Situation

When you're feeling out of control and there's a lot of internal chaos, the best thing you can do is focus on the things that are within your control. Start by giving yourself a break, because these feelings are normal. Most women going through menopause feel the same way you feel, so you're definitely not alone.

That being said, here are some tips to help you manage:

  • Stay Informed: Educate yourself about menopause and its symptoms. Knowledge is empowering and can alleviate fear and confusion.

  • Seek Support: Talk to healthcare professionals, friends, or support groups. Sharing your experiences can be incredibly validating and comforting.

  • Don't Neglect Yourself: You likely are responsible for others, whether they're children, grandchildren, elderly parents, or even a team of co-workers you manage. With these responsibilities, it's easy to forget about taking care of yourself, so try and work activities that promote relaxation and well-being into your schedule. This includes skincare routines that nourish your skin, which may be experiencing dryness or sensitivity due to hormonal changes.

  • Healthy Lifestyle: Maintain a balanced diet, exercise regularly, and get enough sleep. I've found that during periods when I had trouble sleeping, I would not get up at 2am to watch TV or do some work. I stayed in bed and rested, even though I couldn't sleep. Rest without sleep is still beneficial for your body and mind. These habits can significantly improve your overall mood and energy levels.
