2 Ways I Survived The Holidays During Menopause

Are you overwhelmed just thinking about the holidays?

I totally get it—menopause can make you feel like everything’s bigger and more stressful. Even out of control.

For me, it was like riding a rollercoaster I hadn’t signed up for. One minute, I’d be laughing; the next, choking back tears. Even simple things, like picking out clothes, became a struggle. I’d have a fashion crisis every morning and inevitably change outfits multiple times a day because of sweat from hot flashes or feeling uncomfortable in my own skin.

As an older mom with younger kids, I didn’t have the luxury of slowing down. September would roll in, and I’d feel this looming sense of dread as the holiday chaos approached. School events, Halloween costumes, Thanksgiving planning, holiday baking, family visits—just thinking about it all made me feel like I was drowning.

Ever felt this way?

The worst part - one day, I got lost on the way to a doctor’s appointment. When I called to say I was late, the very impatient receptionist told me I’d be charged a $75 fee if I missed the 15-minute grace period. I broke down in tears and could barely talk. I felt completely out of control and a bit like a crazy woman. I knew something had to change.

So, I decided to take control in small steps. Even though there was a lot I wanted to fix, I focused on changing just two things. Here’s what I did:
  • Prioritized “Me Time”: I started getting up an hour earlier than everyone else. That was my time for coffee, quiet reflection, planning my day, and prayer.
  • The “One Less Thing” Rule: I picked one small, easy task to finish before lunchtime. Knocking out that one thing gave me a sense of accomplishment and helped me feel more like myself. Plus, it was one less thing. 😊
These small steps were lifesavers for me. Getting small things off my plate allowed me to face the bigger tasks with a bit more calm.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by menopause, especially with the holidays on the horizon, try these steps. It’s easy to say and harder to do, I know. But trust me, taking action can really help.
