Magnolia Bark Extract: What It Is, and Why We Love It

By Lisa Duffy

The short answer: Magnolia bark extract comes from the bark of the Magnolia tree. Skincare formulators value it for its natural plant compounds, and it’s the ingredient I built Magnolia Skin Essentials around. Please read this as general information about an ingredient, not medical advice.

What Is Magnolia Bark Extract?

Magnolia bark extract comes from Magnolia officinalis, a flowering tree native to Asia, with a long history in traditional Chinese and Japanese practice. Its bark contains two natural compounds, magnolol and honokiol, that researchers have studied for years. A published scientific review describes both as antioxidant molecules and notes they’ve been studied for their soothing properties in laboratory research.[1]

On an ingredient label, you’ll see it listed as Magnolia Officinalis Bark Extract.

Not to be confused with:

  • Magnolia bark supplements, which are taken by mouth

That's a different product made for different purposes.

Why I chose Magnolia Bark Extract

My brand began with my own reflection in the mirror. In 2018, my skin was changing with age and hormones, and I couldn’t find anything gentle enough that actually felt right. So I went back to school. I earned my certificate in cosmetic formulation from the Centre of Excellence in 2019, and I’ve kept learning ever since through Formula Botanica and with cosmetic chemist Perry Romanowski.

That same year, I created Magnolia Skin Essentials for women going through the same changes I was. I wanted clean skincare that is simple, gentle, and made by hand. Magnolia bark extract became the heart of that work.

A Few Gentle Cautions

I’d rather you love your skin than rush a new product. So please:

  • Patch test first. Apply a small amount to your inner forearm and wait a day or two before using anything new on your face.
  • Check with your doctor or dermatologist first if your skin is very reactive or you have a skin condition.
  • Ask your health care provider before starting new skincare if you’re pregnant, nursing, or taking medications.
  • Stop using any product that stings, burns, or causes redness or a rash.

Frequently asked questions

Is Magnolia bark extract safe for sensitive skin?
Many women with sensitive skin use products made with plant extracts, but no ingredient is right for everyone. Rare allergic reactions to magnolia bark extract in skincare have been reported,[2] which is exactly why I always recommend a patch test first. If you’re unsure, check with your dermatologist.

Can I use it with retinol or vitamin C?
That depends on your skin and the products you’re using, so your dermatologist is the best person to ask. I can’t give personal advice. If your skin tends to get irritated, add one new product at a time.

Where should I start?
If you’d like help choosing, the Radiance-Restoring Bundle ($149) brings my daily steps together in one simple routine. Every order is backed by my 30-day guarantee, so you can try it with confidence.
